"Hermes tells Calypso that she must give up Odysseus forever. And now, one quarter of the way through the epic, we are directly introduced to Odysseus. Notice what this great warrior is doing when we first meet him."

Home to the beautiful Nymph, Calypso, Odysseus was detained here on Ogygia for seven long, miserable years as a prisoner of passion, a slave, and a husband. Ogygia lies far out in the Ionian Sea being a lonely island surrounded by violet water. The scent of cedar smoke and thyme fills the thin air around this island as sounds of Calypso's sweet voice can be heard as she weaves on her golden loom. Even the gods find the island of Ogygia to be a delight.
